SOME OF THE BEST FARMLAND IN CALHOUN COUNTY
According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) approximately 40% or about 9,000 acres are currently devoted to agriculture. Roughly 10% is under irrigation. The primary crops grown are corn, soybeans, and wheat. Currently, there is one dairy operation and two operations that feed cattle.
There are approximately 425 acres enrolled in CRP (Conservation Reserve Program). CRP is a program administered by the Farm Service Agency. CRP removes cropland from production and protects topsoil from erosions and provides wildlife habitat. By reducing water runoff and sedimentation, it helps to protect groundwater and surface water.
