Roads
The Township does not have jurisdiction of roads. All roads in the township are under the jurisdiction of the Calhoun County Road Department (CCRD) or the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Hawthorne Drive is currently the only private road in the Township.
Highways with Interstate, Business Loop, U.S., or M designation are the responsibility of MDOT. In Marshall township, this includes I-69, I-94, BL-94, and M-96. All other roads are either county primary or local roads. Maintenance of all public roads in the Township not under the authority of MDOT is the responsibility of the CCRD to maintain.
There are no township roads in the Michigan road system. While townships are permitted by law to expend surplus funds on improving and maintaining roads under contracts with the CCRD, the township government is not required to do so. Road Commissions also have limitations including with funding distributed from the Michigan Transportation Fund (MTF) which may be expended for construction purposes on county local roads only to the extent matched by money from other sources.
